Historical Controls

Our sympathies of course, but we cannot,
In spaces where true Britons take their ease,
Permit a monument upon this lot
To those who might have come as refugees.

Let no-one claim, though, that we would not douse
The flames of hatred: why not put up, say,
A plaque in Fleet Street, or at Northcliffe House,
Commemorating those we turned away?
