That Was the MUSE That Was

The King Is Dead

It is the 16th of August 1977.
Up as usual at quarter to seven,
picked a copy of the ‘Daily Mail’
that the paper boy never fails
to deliver and I suddenly read
that Elvis the Pelvis was dead.
It came as a shattering shock
to learn that the king of rock
was no more and would not
make teenyboppers go hot
with desire and salivating
while their idol is gyrating,
moodily singing the blues
or Blue Suede Shoes.
For his many fans Graceland
Is forever the Promised Land.*
