The Call

There’s one thing I want to make clear:
don’t call me pet, or love, or dear.
If you want me just whistle, that’s all.
Follow the advice of Lauren Bacall:
Just put your lips together and blow.
If you are a friend I will let you know
I’ve heard your call and I’ll respond
with the same sound to form a bond.
Identification is the name of the game
and so we call each other “by name”.
I won’t recognise you by your physique
but by your signal which is unique.
It’s a sensible way to keep in touch
and the effort required isn’t too much.
