Always A Baby

Her warm fragrant head sings fluent babble

Through a smacking soother.

Ten tiny nailed fingers fervently mine a pulse

At the elbow.

Vein throbs, hand is numbed .

Pray for Hypnos, bearing slumber.

Pray he comes soon.

Next door slams to work at six a.m.

Baby body shudders, hands claw.

Khronos, stay away.
